Newly Qualified Teachers

As an NQT in Thurrock you can expect:

By choosing to take your first teaching appointment in Thurrock, you have already made a real difference to young people's lives, adding your professional and personal skills to an authority where they will be valued and developed.

Thurrock's young learners need top quality teachers with commitment and dedication who can provide the high standards of education they deserve. They need teachers to help them gain the best start in life – to inspire them every day and give them the courage and confidence to be able to succeed.

Thurrock's approach to your Induction Year is designed to be supportive, varied and comprehensive to help you to become the best quality teacher you can be.

Your year will start with a 'Welcome Event', where you can meet key Local Authority officers and other new teachers to Thurrock. Your school will identify an induction tutor who will have day-to-day oversight of your support and monitoring. You will also be given a Professional Development Portfolio and support programme, which is likely to include observations of other teachers, visits to other schools and opportunities to attend professional development courses.

You will be observed teaching during the course of your induction year in Thurrock and will have reviews with your induction tutor. These observations will help you develop as a teacher as you will be given feedback about the aspects of your teaching that are going well and ways in which you could develop.

Once you have completed your Induction Year, the support for your professional development and progress continues in Thurrock.

We realise how important it is to you to have an appropriate workload, an acceptable work/life balance and supportive continuing professional development opportunities. Through our training schools for secondary phase NQTs and through a programme of courses for primary phase NQTs we provide a series of dedicated professional development opportunities to enhance the work of our induction tutors and senior staff in schools.

In addition there is a dedicated NQT helpline which will put you in touch with the team of people in Thurrock who are working to support all our newly qualified teachers.
